About the Book Bus
Who we are

The Book Bus - Who We AreThe Book Bus Foundation (Charity number 1117357) recognises the right of every child to gain enjoyment from, and to learn from, books and reading.

The charity’s aims are to share with thousands of children around the world the pleasure and value that books can bring, and to plant the seeds of a life-long love of reading. By including art and music in the Book Bus’ activities, we hope that young children will associate reading with enjoyment and creativity.

About Tom Maschler, Founder of the Book Bus

Tom Maschler, Publisher & Founder of The Book BusTom Maschler was a publisher for over four decades. While still in his twenties he ran Jonathan Cape, where he published no fewer than thirteen Nobel Prize winners. He nurtured the careers of many of the Twentieth Century's most esteemed authors including Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Ian McEwan, Doris Lessing, Joseph Heller, Roald Dahl, Bruce Chatwin, Philip Roth and Kurt Vonnegut. He also came up with the idea for the Booker Prize, now acknowledged as the most significant fiction prize in the world.

Quentin Blake

Quentin Blake, illustrator & Patron of The Book BusAs one of Britain’s best loved children’s authors and illustrators the Book Bus is fortunate to have Quentin Blake personally design and illustrate our beloved buses.

Cementing his involvement with the bus, Quentin decided to join our board of trustees in January 2009.

Journey to Africa

Journey to ZambiaAlmost 30 years old, this once London bus, has been renovated to become a working classroom and library.

After Quentin Blake decorated the bus in a spectacular mural, the bus was shipped by Wallnius Willenheim from Southampton to Port Elizabeth, South Africa and driven to Cape Town.
