The Book Bus “I am a Reader” Literacy Campaign
"I am a Reader" aims to help 10,000 disadvantaged children from Zambia and Malawi to learn to read and write by 2020.
is a three-year programme in partnership with
under-resourced primary schools in the region
where each child will receive a structured
reading scheme, mentored reading practice and
free access to a local library. Our aim is that children
should complete the scheme as proficient readers and that
each partner school will have the skills and resources to
continue producing confident readers well into the future.
What it takes to create 10,000 readers by 2020
Book Buses and libraries
"Charlie", "George" and "Matilda" are our magical Book Buses, they will provide literacy outreach and mobile library services to our partner schools in Zambia and Malawi. Our community libraries in Livingstone and Kitwe (Zambia) and Mangochi (Malawi) will help children develop their reading habit with free access to thousands of fabulous books throughout the year.
Trained and dedicated staff
Our teams of project coordinators, drivers and librarians bring fun, knowledge and creativity to share with the children. They will provide teacher support and mentoring to the children during and after school and throughout the holidays.
Books and resources
Children love our books and the activities that bring them to life. Joining a structured reading scheme will accelerate their reading skills and get them on the path to literacy. Books are in English and local language and are sourced locally when possible or from the UK.
Children joining the "I am a Reader" pilot literacy scheme in Malawi in 2015 improved their reading ability by an average of 39% in one year.
