Meet the Book Bus Team

Our Mission

Improving children's lives one book at a time.

The Book Bus aims to improve child literacy levels in Africa, Asia and South America by providing children with books and the inspiration to read them. The Book Bus is currently working in Zambia, Malawi and Ecuador.

We introduce ourselves below:

Tom Maschler

Founder of the Book Bus Foundation
Publisher and book Bus Founder, Tom Maschler

Tom Maschler was a publisher for over four decades. Whilst in his twenties he ran Jonathan Cape, where he published thirteen Nobel Prize winners. He nurtured the careers of many of the Twentieth Century's most esteemed authors. He also came up with the idea for the Booker Prize acknowledged as the most significant fiction prize in the world.

Tom has long had a love and fascination for children's books. One of his proudest achievements was to attract Roald Dahl to the publishing house. Tom was also responsible for pairing Dahl with his long-time collaborator, Quentin Blake, whose illustrations contributed so much to the author’s books.

Tom’s inspiration to start the Book Bus came after a trip to Zambia where he saw that literacy was one of the key life skills that could take a child from poverty to prosperity.

Sir Quentin Blake

Patron
Author, Illustrator and Book Bus Charity Trustee, Quentin Blake

Quentin Blake is one of Britain’s best loved children’s authors and illustrators. The Book Bus is fortunate to have Quentin Blake personally design and illustrate the artwork that makes our buses look so beautiful.

Cementing his involvement with the bus, Quentin decided to join our board of trustees in January 2009. Quentin has achieved a phenomenal amount during his ongoing career and we are incredibly proud to be working with him.
