The UK Book Bus Roadshow

The Book Bus UK Road Show Bus

Lands End to John O’Groats - October 2013 to March 2014
The Book Bus is coming to England, Scotland and Wales! We will be visiting schools, libraries, universities and workplaces across the UK to spread awareness of the charity, recruit volunteers for our projects overseas and raise funds to run our mobile libraries in Africa, Asia and South America. Each visit will highlight the value of reading and literacy by illustrating the work we do with children from all around the world.

The Book Bus Road Show appeals to all ages and you are warmly invited to participate. We can offer special visits to schools that help you highlight classroom themes such as Global Citizenship, reading and literacy. If your school, university or place of work have raised funds for the Book Bus we can visit you to present the work of the charity and deliver one of our fabulous Quentin Blake inspired donor certificates.

Help with a Donation

Volunteering in Zambia

The Book Bus Foundation is a charity funded entirely through voluntary donations. Our donors have helped over six thousand children improve their reading and writing skills since 2008.

In 2013 and 2014 we are continuing to supply books and reading resources to children around the world. Funds raised during the UK Road Show will provide Book Bus resources to children in Zambia and Malawi. Please give generously, your contribution will help thousands of children benefit from these valuable resources.

With your help we can send this Book Bus to Malawi. New Book Bus destined for Malawi

Our beautiful new Book Bus “George” is going to serve schools and communities near Blantyre in the Southern Region of Malawi. Once in Malawi the Book Bus and its crew of story-tellers and reading assistants will bring books and fun-filled activities to 800 children every week.

The Book Bus will leave London on 1st April 2014 and arrive in Blantyre, Malawi on 25th May 2014. We are fundraising to cover the cost of sending the Book Bus to Malawi, a distance of 7,321 miles! You can help with a donation, every £1 brings this wonderful Book Bus two miles closer to the children in Malawi.

You can sponsor a mobile library in Africa for a day

You can help the Book Bus bring the joy of reading to disadvantaged communities in Lusaka for only £75 per day! Our Book Bus “Charlie” is stacked high with fabulous books and it spends a whole day touring the city’s poorest neighbourhoods inspiring children and young adults to practice and improve their reading and writing skills. This after-school and outside-the-classroom service is lead by local communities and provides a tremendous boost to literacy levels in their neighbourhood.

A donation of £75 will fund the daily running costs of the Book Bus and its driver, the librarian and a book donation to the local community.

The Book Bus distributing books in rural Africa

If you are a returned volunteer living in the UK the Book Bus Roadshow is a fantastic opportunity for you to continue supporting us: you might like to jump aboard to share your tall tales from Africa with children at your local school; your friends may be interested in volunteering with us or you might be thinking of organising a fundraising event to coincide with the Book Bus visit.

Even if you have no previous Book Bus experience you are warmly invited to join us at any of our public venues country-wide. Please contact us at

School visits

Quentin Blake artwork on Book Bus Roadshow

You can request a special Book Bus visit to your school that can help you highlight classroom themes such as Global Citizenship, reading and literacy. The activities we can provide are listed below. Please contact us to discuss your ideas so that we can plan the visit to suit your needs. If your school has raised funds for the Book Bus we will present one of our fabulous Quentin Blake inspired donor certificates.

School 2 School

During the Book Bus visit we can link your classroom to a school in Zambia, Malawi or Ecuador and conduct a live programme to share specific themes and day to day living experiences. (Connectivity conditions at our partner schools may not always provide a good quality internet link between schools).

Introduction to the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms Scheme

The Book Bus works as a partner organisation with the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms scheme. Find out how the Book Bus could help your school develop a connection with a partner school in Zambia, Malawi, India or Ecuador.
Read more about our Connecting Classrooms

Connecting Classrooms is a global education programme, which offers funding and resources for school partnerships, professional development for teachers, and the opportunity to share best practice with colleagues in the UK and more than 50 countries throughout Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas.

Visiting authors and storytellers

We can link in with visiting authors and story tellers where time and schedules permit. If your school has already organised an author visit we may be able to time a visit for the same day.

A volunteer workshop

Many school teachers join the Book Bus as overseas volunteers during the Easter and Summer breaks - talk about a “Busman’s Holiday”! If you would like to know more about this exciting opportunity we can present the volunteer scheme to you and your colleagues as part of your school visit.

How much will it cost for the Book Bus to visit my School?

There is no fee for the visit although we encourage the school to support the Road Show’s fundraising campaigns. See “Help with a Donation” tab above.

The Book Bus & Miles Kelly Publishing

Children's books to inspire and share

Miles Kelley Publishing

In 2013/14, publisher Miles Kelly will publish new books, ebooks and interactive ebooks to raise enough money to buy The Book Bus a new bus that will be stationed in Malawi. Miles Kelly’s vision is to support The Book Bus in both their short- and long-term goals.

To raise the money, Miles Kelly has produced a selection of First Q&A Books in both print and electronic formats. First Q&A Books are little books with big questions! Children can find out anything including which animal has the biggest teeth, why dolphins squeal and how bugs cut up leaves. Activity panels on every page help young readers put new information into context. 10% of net receipts from every copy sold goes to The Book Bus.
